We've just come back from visiting West Australia where we took some photos of one of our recently finished projects. The architecture is simply amazing which made our job exhilarating. Everything is covered in smooth lines allowing the light to simply spill over and create this perfect marriage between form and texture.

How stupendously exciting times ahead! Again, we've been selected to be part of Vivid Light Festival! One of the biggest and most vibrant festivals of light in the world. Each year Sydney lights up in this glourious display of lights, arts and all types of creativity. Every night from 6pm onwards, visitors from around the world come and marvel at light sculptures, projections, light displays and other events. It is truly magical and ... we're in it again!!!!

Not only that, but we were honoured to be selected for the showcase piece that Vivid officials select to be presented at their Media Launch Event but we'll cover that amazing experience in our next blog.

This year we've decided to wake up the child within and revisit some of our childhood toys. We noticed that kids nowadays are playing with toys that are completely different to what we were used to and what we grew up with. Now, blame it on the skip in generation and we do get it. Times are different but we still don't feel so old. We remenisced about our oldies goldies toys, one idea led to another and Bob's your uncle! Dipping Birds!

Dipping birds in an imitation of an old novelty toy that we used to marvel at so. It was a tiny little birdie that you'd place on the rim of your glass and it would bob and dip its beak into the water pretending to drink. We took that concept and scaled it up. Big time.

The whole installation is comprised of two large abstract birds; each is approximately 2.5m tall; that alternate dipping their beaks into the water and seemingly drink the coloured light from the pond. One of the birds lowers its head and dips the beak into the surface and gradually changes colour from head to toe with the colour of the pond lights. Meanwhile the pond lights also gradually change colour to suit, mimicking the colour being soaked up by the bird. After the bird has “soaked up the colour” it now straightens up, leaving the pond in a different light so the other bird can repeat the action. This scheme is therefore always changing and thus offering a fun experience wether one would like to be entertained by the action or simply relish in the dreamy nature of the colour change.

Allow us to take this opportunity and reminisce about the project.

We were engaged by acclaimed design duo Vince Alafaci and Caroline Choker from Acme&CO.; renowned amongst other for their work on The Grounds in Alexandria and The Incinerator in Willoughby; to do the lighting design for the refurbishment of an old distillery in Rosebery, Archie Rose.

The former warehouse is split into a distillery on one side and a bar on the other, separated with an enclosed corridor. Light Atelier has created a lighting scheme that follows the ambient of the distillery whilst still honouring an intimate atmosphere bar despite strong industrial note.

The seemingly rudimental lighting ambient allied with copper bar accoutrements, bottle shelves and barrel-shaped booths further the industrial ambient of the space.

Hi everyone! We're so so soooo excited to let you know that we've expanded our services. We always believed that no project is too small for us and that there is a lot of people out there dying for some simple and concise advice about what to do with the lights when you're doing a small RENO.

Were that be one of the rooms in your house, or an extension, or your veranda needed a bit of TLC, or you updated your office. Too small to engage professionals, right? And now you're stuck with the lights. What to do, where to put them to best use and what to be mindful of. You don't want to spend a fortune either. Well, here's where we come in. Give us a shout. We might be able to help.

Maybe it's the cold that made us look at the timber as a material for lights, or maybe just because they're fantastic. We feel that these lights are a cross between solid wood furniture and light fittings and they're pulling it off in a wondrous way. We're already feeling warmer.

Today we're paying tribute to the minimalistic. We find it incredible how some light fittings are so beautifully rudimental, stipped of all excess adornments and embelishments and yet make such a bold statement. Sometimes less is more and, oh boy, we feel in these following cases it is so true. Such beauty in simplicity. No garnish, just light. That's all you need.

This Wednesday we decided to have a looksy around Vivid. It was a beautiful night, albeit a tad cold but nothing a brisk walk or a cup of takeaway coffee wouldn't thaw. We were eager to see what our fellow designers and artists have come up with and were as always amazed how marvelous the human imagination is. We decided for the night to only see a part of it and that is Walsh Bay to Opera House. We didn’t always agree on what spurred our interest nor on our level of liking but we did agree on a few stand out pieces. Allow me to say a few words about them.

THE DRESSES

Our absolute favourite. The intricacy of optic fibres and subtle colour changing was just mesmerizing.

AYLA

Loved it! How simple yet such big impact. The changing moon projection worked so well with the warm light halo splashed on a sand textured wall that we all agreed it should be a permanent art piece.

LUMINOUS CANOPY

Again, simple yet beautiful in its simplicity. Loved the fact that it uses the elements, it this case the breeze through the passageway to enhance the experience.

LIGHT ORIGAMI

Speachless. So good. The light bounces and reflects of the millions of triangular surfaces in a mind-blowing explosion of light.

TIDAL REED

Another installation that we absolutely loved. Beautiful and simple in design but mesmerizing to look at. The reeds use the undulating of water to gently sway and glow in the night.

It was an amazing feeling to see all our hard work pay off. Numerous people were walking around our "Tumbleweed" sculpture and reading out the words. Many of them took photos, some of them even took photos of friends standing in front of the installation.

The message behind the artwork is the myriad of emotions that one faces during the design process. Mostly the feelings are positive however there is also ever present fear. Fear of failure, fear of disapproval,... The impact of the last is so powerful that it can not only affect but sometimes even overcome the positive.

As all artists do, we were wondering if our message got through so we actually spoke to some of the visitors and they were not only excited to meet the designers but also very keen to tell us how clear the message was.

We're now breathing a small sigh of relief, our blood sweat and tears were worth it. Come down to Walsh Bay and take a look. Hope to see you there.
